Limitless Pint-size Potential
Small Steps, Big Kicks
Junior SCORES practices also utilize our three main values of teamwork, leadership and commitment to further foster growth of young poet-athletes.
The Junior SCORES program is designed to meet the physical and academic development needs of poet-athletes grades K - 2. Junior SCORES takes place twice a week from January to March; each program day has a writing practice and a soccer practice.
Curriculum
WritingSoccerThe Soccer Coach Manual K - 2 uses a combination of small-sided games and soccer activities to keep practice moving, fun, and safe. Each activity is associated with a health piece to create on-the-go health knowledge.
The Playing with Poetry writing curriculum builds reading and writing skills by focusing on age-appropriate poetry. Activities associated with each poem reinforce literacy skills such as blending sounds, using inference from text, and identifying speaker and theme.
Program Moments
Junior SCORES poet-athletes are able to showcase their new skills in front of parents, coaches, teachers, and friends during a Game Day at the end of the season. On this special day, students are outfitted with Chicago SCORES uniforms and play another school participating in the program. Teams may also perform poetry readings and exchange homemade medals for each other.
