CHICAGO, IL (Aug. 31, 2021) -- Despite scorching hot field temperatures for the majority of the day, the squad representing KPMG successfully defended its crown to capture its second straight title at America SCORES Chicago’s SCORES Cup, held on Saturday, Aug. 28 at the CIBC Fire Pitch.

“Several of the companies that competed are still working remotely, so you could feel the energy on the pitch as teams came together not only to enjoy a day of playing soccer but also to connect in person for the first time in a long time,” said America SCORES Chicago’s Executive Director, Amy Mummery.

Chicago’s longest running charity soccer competition, back for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCORES Cup is an all-day corporate tournament filled with networking, team-building, charity, and healthy competition. Participating organizations’ coed teams played three matches of pool play before entering a single elimination tournament. After a tightly-contested 2-1 win over William Blair in the semifinal round, KPMG cruised to the championship with 2-0 victory over Societe Generale.

The event serves as a fundraiser for SCORES’ Literacy In Action Program, and this year generated more than $30,000 of support for youth living in Chicago’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. Every organization that enters the tournament supports a full year of SCORES programming for a team of poet-athletes at one of its partner schools.

“Monday was the first day back for many of our students and they're already asking their coaches and teachers, ‘When does SCORES start?’ Every young person deserves healing centered spaces to play and build skills - and they're hungry for it. It's one of the many reasons why events like the SCORES Cup, which help raise funds to support our work across schools, are so important,” commented Mummery about the beginning of the 2021-22 school year and the impact of the SCORES Cup on the organization’s programming.

The SCORES Cup, with a field of nearly 150 players, was made possible thanks to the support and sponsorship provided by KPMG, Abbvie, DICK’S Sporting Goods, William Blair, Fresenius Kabi, Societe Generale, CVS Health, and Moelis & Co.

“This year's Cup was a great way to launch into our first week back to school,” Mummery said. “I spoke with a few team captains who were eyeing that trophy and are already thinking ahead to SCORES Cup 2022!”

The SCORES Cup will return to its normally scheduled time frame in June of 2022. Interested organizations and individuals are encouraged to contact Ethan Armstrong at ejarmstrong@chicagoscores.org for more information.
